Smart grid project: Will Bescom be 3rd time lucky? Continuing its efforts to save energy and cut down on transmission losses, Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has embarked on yet another smart grid project. Unlike its previous two projects that were tested in urban areas and failed, Bescom's next pilot smart grid has been planned at Chandapura, a small pocket near Anekal, which has a mix of rural and urban consumers. Besides benefiting about 2,000 consumers, the project will help Bescom to explore or study the possibilities of smart grid at a larger scale. Air conditioners are always rated in Tons capacity instead of kW because Air conditioners are designed on the basis of quantity of heat removal from room, hall or specific area. Quantity of heat is termed in Tons means if an air conditioner is able to remove 1000 kilocalories of heat or 4120 kilojoules or 12000 BTU of heat in an hour that AC rated as 1 Ton of AC because 1000 Kilocalories or 4120 kilojoules or 12000 BTU equal to one Ton of heat. Also, this is the same case for freezer and refrigerator i.e. refrigeration system. Good to know: BTU = British thermal unit. Vellore Institute of Technology University, one of the premier institutions in the country, is mulling expansion to Andhra Pradesh by setting up its campus in Amaravati. A few days ago, the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority conditionally allotted a large chunk of land to the university in the capital region, it is reliably learnt. However, the allotment of land to VIT and other educational institutions by the CRDA is expected to come up before the State Cabinet . According to sources, the university sought at least 150 acres of land. The CRDA fixed land costs at Rs. 25 lakh per acre if it is leased and Rs. 50 lakh per acre if the land is purchased. On the other hand, the State government also expects the university to provide higher education in various streams to at least 5,000 students in eight years from the start.
